A Spanish startup has developed a wind turbine prototype featuring a bladeless design. The straw-like design of the Vortex Bladeless attracts whirlwinds which develop at determined frequencies causing the turbine to oscillate.
Whilst the prototype does have its share of doubters (mostly due to the fact that it is around 30% less efficient than regular turbines), the developers claim that the turbine will be 50% less expensive and, due to its size, will be able to double the number of turbines in a given area - equating to a net energy gain of 40 percent.
Could this be the future of wind power generation?
