I am deeply concerned about climate change. Can you provide us with a Life Cycle Assessment of the Greenhouse gas intensity of LNG imported gas considering that this gas could come from different regions of the world and be extracted with different techniques including fracking? Have you looked into how shale gas transported from the U.S. compare to for example Victorian gas when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions?Thank you.

Hi Lena85,

Thank you for your question.

We agree with your concern about climate change. Currently, AGL is the largest corporate emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in Australia. At the same time, we have Australia’s largest privately-owned and operated portfolio of large-scale renewable energy assets. We realise we have a large role to play in action on climate change in Australia. We believe renewables are the future of energy and have committed to getting out of coal from 2022.

Most of the gas produced in the world still comes from traditional sources, not fracking or shale gas, and we are most likely to buy gas from these sources such as from Qatar and Africa because it is the same sort of gas that we use in Victoria which relied on traditional gas reserves in Bass Strait which are now in decline.

A greenhouse gas assessment will form part of the EES and will compare greenhouse gas emissions from Bass Strait and from overseas sources of supply.

We are waiting on the expert report to be produced as part of the EES assessment.
