I'm a retail investor via our SMSF and want to know more about what factors are used to calculate the 'embedded energy during development of the wind farms'.
Does it include that energy used to - extract the raw materials, shipment to manufacturing sites eg. to India for steelmaking, shipment here, the construction of foundations. ongoing maintenance and so on.
Are any turbines etc manufactured in Australia?
What is the design life of a turbine?
Thank you for your questions about the Silverton Wind Farm. Here are some responses to your enquiries:
Yes, the embedded energy in a wind farm does included the extraction and manufacture of raw materials used in the development of a wind farm. This figure will vary depending on the wind turbine and may be between 6-9 months, you may find the following article of interest - https://www.newscientist.com/lastword/mg24332461-400-what-is-the-carbon-payback-period-for-a-wind-tu...
Large scale wind turbines are generally manufactured overseas, however, you may find the following article of interest - https://www.holdingredlich.com/wind-turbine-manufacturing-resumes-in-australia#:~:text=Whilst%20util...
The design life of a wind turbine is typically 20 years, however, this can be extended subject to the wind turbine and site specific wind conditions. For example, the wind turbines at the Silverton Wind Farm have a design life of 25 years.
